How many of us have actually thought about this expression? Water is something that comes from the tap. That soothes us in a bath. We can swim in it. It carries ferries transporting people and goods across the world. If we’re lucky, we can try ocean diving or catch fish in the wild rivers.
Water is truly the connecting bridge between the internal and external. Our bond with life.
When babies are born, they are about 75% water. This starts decreasing when we age, but still – even the adult human body is made of 60% water on average. Most of this is in the intracellular fluid, the liquid hydrating all our cells. The rest (about a third) is in the extracellular fluid.
Water is the primary building block of our cells, carrying oxygen and nutrients around our body, at the same time flushing out waste and toxins.
It’s crystal clear – we need to keep both our internal and external waters pure and flowing.
As we need to take care of our bodies – including the quality and movement of our inner waters – we need to take care of the water on Earth. The quality and accessibility of the planetary waters determines the quality of the fluid within.
Although we might think of water as something that is everywhere – in our oceans, seas and rivers – only a tiny fracture of it is accessible and available for human consumption. Think of it as a narrow foot bridge that connects the inner with the outer – meaning we truly need to keep that bridge sustainable for the generations to come.
Although it is true that 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water – making us a Blue Planet, only 3.5% of it is freshwater that humans can drink. And most of this freshwater – 68% – is unavailable as it’s frozen in glaciers and ice.
You see, water is actually truly precious.
Something that we should treat with respect and never waste.
Today, 785 million people — about 1 in 9 — lack access to safe water. It is estimated that by 2025 about two-third of the world’s population may suffer from fresh water shortage.
When the freshwater disappears, so do we.
But we can all do our bit today.
